Maungatautari is home to three kākāpō who just this year have been heard booming for the first time on the mainland in more than a century. Kākāpō are critically endangered with numbers very slowly rising from a population of 51 in 1995 to around 250 in 2025 as breeding only occurs every 2-7 years.
