This small brown owl is well known for its iconic ‘morepork’ call. Ruru were surviving on Maungatautari even before the fence was completed in 2006. Like other owls, Ruru can fly silently through the forest at night due to the serrated edges of their feathers as they reduce turbulence and muffle the sound of air passing over their wings
